Recalibrating the Inner Compass with Design
The transformation of the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital (RWJH) Eating Disorders Unit in Somerville, New Jersey features a healing roof garden, small group therapy spaces and specialized lighting, interior finishes, and upgraded patient rooms all of which synthesize the space into a healing oasis. The team incorporated evidence-based design with the unique needs of an eating disorder unit to create a state-of-the-art therapeutic space.
This quintessential element, the roof-top garden, was included specifically to provide an area for self-reflection, comfort, and healing. Quiet areas for small group therapy sessions such as yoga and meditation were included in the design. Separate healing environments for the two types of patients – adolescents and adults – will allow them to focus on their distinct challenges to foster healing. Interior finishes and lighting that mimic the natural, outdoor environment create both easily identifiable and calming focal areas. The innovative installation of ambient lighting will reflect circadian rhythms, helping to promote sleep, which is important for healing. These focal areas along with large graphics, sleek millwork, and engaging technology envelop the visitors and patients in a safe, comfortable environment.
